About Mad in Australia
Mad in Australia is a part of a worldwide group of individuals and an affiliate of Mad in
America, who support human rights and social justice-based approaches to mental health
issues. We seek to promote alternatives to the mainstream biological approaches across
Australia. Peer/ psychiatric survivors/people of Lived Experience knowledge and expertise of
how systems fail under pins the approaches that will be presented here. We also welcome
the voices of our allies, families of choice, carers, and those working in the sector, who are
critical of the current prominent discourse.
We advocate for change by:
Creating, maintaining and sustaining this website
Making available resources, podcasts, journal articles and creative expressions
through this website.
Holding space for connection with others
We endeavour to foreground the work of our First Nations people and our Culturally and
Racially Marginalised (CARM) communities, acknowledging the generational trauma that we
have been part of and the racism that is inherent in our systems.
Mad in Australia is a volunteer-led project, if you would like to know more about how you
